Poetry for Non-Poets and Poets Alike

Tuesday, January 7, 2025 (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM) (PST)

Description

January 7, 14, 21, & 28 and February 4 & 11 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Discover poetry as a form of communication with self and community in this six-session class. Poet, author, and Teaching Artist Amelia says, “We are all poets, and this class offers venues to explore how to get words into action and discover the hidden power of the poetic line.” Students will be given time in each of the six sessions to generate their own poems from prompts provided by Amelia. In the first session, Amelia will guide the group in an exploration of modern poems that speak to the reader and demystify the form. The second class will be a space to share. An opportunity to look at different forms that are currently popular in literature is the focus of the third class. The fourth session presents an opportunity to share more written work. In the final sessions, students will show how research can help us produce poems that have strength and directness, and share their discoveries with the group. Please bring your own writing materials. Please enter through the 5th Street door.
